Asparagus has been flexible about nearly everything in his life so far: several foster homes, a flood, a transport plan that’s changed more than once. That kind of flexibility also exemplifies Austin Pets Alive!’s Safety Net Fostering program: temporary care that flexes to fit whatever the situation demands, so a dog never loses the home he has waiting for just because the path there got complicated.

Asparagus’s story began on the side of a road in Crystal City, Texas, where he was abandoned with his littermates. A rescuer found his sisters first. Asparagus had wandered away, so she went back for him separately and eventually caught him, too. Then the flooding in South and Central Texas hit in July 2026, and Asparagus got loose again.

Austin Pets Alive! found Asparagus as a stray during flood search-and-rescue, a small stroke of luck in the middle of a disaster. During the flood, APA! set up a dedicated page for animals displaced by the floodwaters, coordinated with the city and county services, and pushed posts across as many Facebook groups as it could reach, trying to reunite every animal it found with wherever they belonged. That’s how APA! connected Asparagus back to Friends for Life Animal Rescue and learned the group already had an adopter waiting for Asparagus in Connecticut.

And Asparagus, it turns out, is very much worth waiting for.

His first foster called him Waffles, and he still perks up to it when he’s in the mood to listen. That foster described him as shy and reserved. His current foster, Kaela, has seen him come out of his shell: he’s best friends with their two young dogs, gets their seven-year-old to run around and play, and completely ignores their cats. He’s smart, obsessed with puzzles and snuffle mats, a dedicated digger and fabric-shredder, and he keeps a strict personal schedule, particularly regarding meal times. Kaela succinctly describes him as a “very opinionated boy.”

Getting Asparagus to his adopter, however, wasn’t simple. There were changes, delays, and unexpected complications. But because APA! had foster families willing to provide a safe place for him each time the plan shifted, none of those setbacks had to become the end of his journey.

On August 26, Asparagus was scheduled to fly to New York where Friends for Life Animal Rescue took him on the last leg of his long journey to Connecticut, to the family that had been waiting for him all along.

Getting Asparagus home took more than one rescue, one foster, or one transport: it took a network of people willing to keep saying yes whenever circumstances changed. That’s the impact of safety-net fostering, and what Pedigree Foundation funding helps make possible: the flexibility to keep animals safe and moving forward until they can finally reach home.
