If you’re not in a position to take on the commitment of long-term fostering, or the lifetime responsibilities of adoption, but still want to help shelter pets our ‘2 Weeks 2 Speak’ temporary foster program was created just for you! Giving pets a break from stressful shelter life and being able to relax in a home lets us find out more about that pet while giving them a much needed break from the hectic daily routine at the shelter.
The 2 Weeks 2 Speak foster program places sheltered pets into temporary 2-week foster care to an approved OC Shelter Pets foster home. The temporary break from shelter life relieves animals form the stress of being kenneled, as well as providing mental/emotional/physical benefits. It has also been proven that this temporary break allows shelter pets to better handle the stressful environment upon return. Although another major benefit to this program is the additional footage and information provided to staff during their stay with you, which increases their adoption chances during their temporary foster period or shortly after return.

Do shelter dogs benefit from short-term foster sleepovers?
Our ideal ‘2 Weeks 2 Speak’ temporary foster candidate is a pet who:
- Are being passed up by in-shelter adoptions for several months.
- May not show well in their kennel due to fear, stress, or excess energy… BUT behaves differently once they get a chance to leave their kennel and spend time outside or in another environment.
- Is showing signs of kennel stress / deterioration due to lack of mental/physical enrichment.
- May have been adopted and returned, sometimes on several occasions.
While in temporary foster care, we’re able to learn more about that pet when they’re in a normal home environment, which doesn’t always mimic how they were behaving in a stressful kennel environment. We’re able to share that valuable information, as well as foster provided photos and videos with shelter staff and potential adopters in order to increase that pets marketing exposure and adoption potential. Additionally, our ‘2 Weeks 2 Speak’ foster program is primarily aimed at not having that pet return to the shelter through effective marketing and promotion of the animal while in your care.

Please note ONLY completed applications can be reviewed. All completed applications are handled first come first serve when approved.
Our focus is on animals who have spent a significant amount time in our Orange County shelters, or will be euthanized if no one steps up and pitches in. We believe very wholeheartedly in the value of foster homes. We want all of the animals currently at our local shelters to spend some time recovering and blossoming in one of our valuable foster homes before moving on to a well matched forever family. We make every effort to place an animal with a foster family who is a good fit for your household and lifestyle. We will search for a deserving adopter for your foster pet, and we invite you to be as involved in that process as you wish to be.
