Sometimes, all you need is a friend to help you come out of your shell; just ask Schneider, Sunflower, and Gretchen!
A Shy Guy Finds His Playmate
Found living in a chicken coop, Schneider was a terrified newcomer when he

first arrived at Austin Pets Alive!. That is, until he was placed in an office with Sunflower, as a shy, retired mama who was once fiercely protective of her babies, this friendship was just as surprising for her.
At first, caretakers thought the pair was slowly warming up to each other. Then, they discovered the two had a secret: they acted shy when people were watching but loved to play when no one was looking! What began as a quiet companionship between the two blossomed into a playful and healing friendship.
With time, Schneider’s newfound confidence helped him connect with a foster who took him home while he awaits for an adoptive family.
A New Friend to Show the Way
With Schneider off to foster, it was time for Sunflower to work her magic on a new office companion: Gretchen.

Like Schneider, Gretchen was extremely timid and struggled to open up to others. But Sunflower was ready to help him* find his confidence like she did with Schneider. As their friendship developed, Sunflower was seen taking the lead during interactions with people while Gretchen watched closely behind. Reassuringly, she encouraged Gretchen to follow her lead. With her by his side, Gretchen has a reassuring example to follow as he learned that the world might not be so scary after all.
*Gretchen was named before we met him. While this name is typically reserved for females, he is a male. We kept the name knowing he’ll likely receive a brand new name when he’s adopted.
One Step Closer to Home
Sometimes, a little friendship can make all the difference. Since Sunflower helped Schenider and Gretchen’s confidence bloom, these three pups have taken their next steps toward adoption and finding the loving homes they deserve.
