2026 Flood Blog Banner - Emergency Help Needed: Responding to Devastating Flooding in South Central Texas
Jul 15, 2026

As catastrophic flooding overwhelms communities south of Austin, including Uvalde, Castroville, Sabinal, and Hondo, APA! has mobilized to help. When shelters are overwhelmed and forced to clear space, we step in to prevent the needless euthanasia of displaced animals, acting as the critical safety net for those who have lost everything. We also serve as first responders for shelter pets. We will keep you updated as this crisis unfolds. Thank you for stepping up to help pets in need and the people who love them!

We need your help right now.

The situation is evolving rapidly, and our needs are immediate. Our primary goal today is to clear our shelter to make space for animals displaced from these rural areas. Without our support, these local shelters are often forced to euthanize their entire populations during disasters; a needless loss we are working around the clock to prevent.

  • Foster: This is our most urgent need. We need to move animals into safe, temporary homes to make room for flood victims. If you can foster a dog or cat for three weeks—or until adoption—you are literally saving a life. Please come to our 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St. location between 12–6pm to be matched with a pet. A limited amount of shorter-term foster opportunities may be available upon request.

  • Adopt: If you have been considering adoption, now is the time and you can even Name your Own Adoption Fee! Adopting an animal from our care opens up a kennel for a pet coming in from the flood zones.

Here are more ways you can support our emergency response efforts:

  • Donate Supplies: We are in urgent need of the following:
    • Medium and large wire crates

    • Canned pet food (dog and cat)

    • Cat litter and disposable litter boxes

    • Training treats, leashes, and Martingale collars

    • Flea and tick prevention (Capstar)

    • Cleaning supplies

    • Donations can be dropped off at our Cesar Chavez location (1156 W. Cesar Chavez St.) daily between 8am and 6pm.

  • Volunteer: We need help with intake, laundry, cleaning, and sorting supplies. Sign up for a shift at our Volunteer Sign Up Portal to join our team on the ground.

  • Make a Monetary Donation: If you cannot help physically, your donation provides the critical fuel for our medical triage, search-and-rescue teams, and the long-term care these animals will require. Donate here to support our Flood Response Fund.
