A video posted by CBS News shows a hawk perched on the side of a public trash can moments before hopping in to grab something tasty. It soon emerges with a rat in its talons.

The hungry hawk proceeds to eat the rodent, seemingly undeterred by any onlookers.

“In New York City, the rats go viral for eating pizza – and the hawks go viral for eating rats,” the post reads. “Watch this bird shock onlookers in the Upper West Side by descending into a trash can and pulling out a sizable ‘snack.’”

“My Red Shoulder hawks catch rats out of storm drains,” commented Jennifer Waligora Quimby. “They are pretty much on top of the food chain when it comes to birds on the East Coast. Awesome hunters.”

The hawk hops in the trash to find a tasty treat.

“He even pulled out a napkin,” wrote Jessica Nicole Stallworth Gindratt. “All he needed was a to-go bag!😆”

“He was in there so long trying to decide between the rat or half eaten falafel 🥙,” commented Tracy Flechsig Smith. “Choices, choices! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂”
